Report on 2011 show in Parish magazine
At six ‘o clock in the
morning on Show morning, down at Holme Meadow it was overcast, windy and cold.
We anticipated twelve hours of discomfort, but no, by 9am. the sun had broken
through and we couldn’t have wished for a better day. People flocked to the show
in thousands and we must have come close to the record attendance set two years
ago. It was good to see so many families there and many have commented how much
they enjoyed their day.
The ladies of the
Women’s Institute had a successful 80th. ‘Birthday’ and put on a display of
photos and memorabilia to mark the occasion. The Craft Marquee gets ever bigger
and there were some thirty stalls this year. There were also over seventy trade
stands on show. Entries were down in some of the horse classes, probably in part
due to the economic climate and the cost of fuel, but also the clash of dates
again with the Bramham Horse Trials. However the Unaffiliated Jumping, as usual,
was well supported and as usual was the last to finish. Jane Cross and her team
deserve a medal!
We had a variety of
displays in the main ring, Bill Heslop showing great skill in handling his
sheepdogs, sheep and geese and the Vintage and Classic Car Society put on an
impressive parade of vehicles, the star being a van which had been used on the
continent during the First World War.
Next year the Show
coincides with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee so the Committee will be looking to
put on something special as part of the celebrations.
Finally, on behalf of
the Show Committee, may I thank all those who helped make the show such a
success.
John England
Secretary.
